The science behind cornstarch and hair conditioner

Fluffy Cloud Playdough

October 4, 2022

We love experimenting in our home, and yesterday was the perfect day. Since it was raining outside and we were getting tired of watching t.v. We decided to learn how cornstarch and hair conditioner react when we put them together.

This activity is great because it helps with eye-hand coordination, which improves the strength of their hands and fingers. It will give your younger child a good head start for when they learn how to hold a pencil, draw or write. It also helps older children learn how to manage stress.

I have a 10-year-old who was feeling a little stressed, so she also made this stress ball and learned stress relieving techniques. Check out of video here of the stirring process.

This stress technique she enjoyed the most as she played with the fluffy cloud:

Curl your toes under as far as you can. Hold for 5 seconds and relax. Feel the tension leave your legs.

Arch your back away from the back of your chair (or off the floor). Hold for 5 seconds and relax.

Lift your shoulders, try to make your shoulders touch your ears. Hold for 5 seconds and relax.

Here's how to make your own fluffy cloud playdough

2 cups of cornstarch

1 cup of hair conditioner (it can be scent)

Food coloring of your choice (optional)

Mix cornstarch, food coloring, and hair conditioner with a spatula until you can't stir any longer.

Mix with your hands; if it's too sticky, add more cornstarch to get to your child's desired consistency.

Put in a ziplock bag to keep it from drying in between playtime.
